The Veneto region is perfect for the production of light fruity reds great in youth with vibrant yet soft fresh fruits. This Corvina/Merlot is no exception. The light colour leads to a gentle nose of cherry and berry fruit with just a hint of green pepper. The palate is equally delicate with no rough edges and a light to medium body which combines beautifully with the cherry and raspberry fruit character. This is not a profound wine but at the price it is easy and very pleasant drinking! Very good slightly chilled with a sausage and red pepper Panino!
This is a lovely example of the art of white wine making to maintain crisp fresh fruit. The colour is pale yellow with hints of green and this leads to a surprisingly intense nose of citrus and apple fruit with a distinctly grassy, herbaceous note, (almost Loire Sauvignon Blanc!). The palate is fresh, zippy and lively with the youthful fruit to the fore. The finish is short but clean and zingy! A great wine for lunchtimes, salads or a glass before dinner!
This is a fantastic example of how fresh and lively Garganega can be when the primary fruit flavours are retained in the wine making. The nose and palate burst with citrus and green fruits with a delicate element of blossom and a short but fresh almond finish. This is the perfect wine for light lunches, Pasta with asparagus and boiled eggs or a bowl of mussels. Matt Thompson really does make superb wine at great value prices.
A wine that offers sensational impact for the modest price point. The deep ruby colour leads to a ripe sunshine aroma of dark plums and cherries with just a whiff of montepulciano' earthy complexity. The palate is all about softness and lush fruit with surprising length and fabulous poise. This is great everyday wine and far too easy to finish the bottle in one sitting!
When Pinot Grigio is left on the vine until fully ripe the skin takes on a dark pinky hue. Any maceration with the skins will then result in a coppery coloured wine which is traditionally called 'Ramato'. In the UK it has become known as rosato but this can be any type of pink wine. This great wine from Ponte Pietra is made in such a way. It has lovely feminine delicacy and is supremely gluggable even on cold winters nights with a good pasta and fish dish. The fruit is gentle and cherry scented and marries well with the floral nuances of the Ramato style. The palate is easy and fresh with a cut of acidity to the finish!
In Puglia a 'Masseria' is a farm and 'Pietrosa' means stony referring to poor, stony soils in which the vines of the estate lie. The estate is part of the excellent San Marzano co-operative and the wines show excellent value with great freshness and scented fruit character.
This is a beautiful wine from a region which is becoming in the words of Gambero Rosso 'an Eldorado for Italian white wine making'! Kerner is little known in the UK but offers extraordinary aromas of green apples, melons and cream. The zippy palate opens to reveal a fairly full body with peaches, apples and citrus fruits in abundance. The cool climate also shines through with a nutty and mineral complexity. Fabulous white, superb for spring and summer drinking with fresh water fish, 'salumi' or risotto with 'funghi'!
