The wines show all of the soft subtle fruit that one would expect from Puglian wines but with a certain added freshness that is often lacking. Mocavero believe that Puglian wines can express elegance as well as rich fruit and this characteristic is ever present throughout their range!
The company is directed by the Mocavero brothers, who just like their ancestors from whom they get their surname, which in Arabic means “warrior” show all the entrepreneurial skills and the inherited passion necessary for the wine industry. The Mocavero Wine Company is convinced that the best way of making good wine is to carry out the whole cycle of production on its own premises. In this way you can guarantee greater control of the product without having to rely on any external agents.

Puglia's signature grape variety does superbly well in the Salento trained to Albarello bushes in the sandy soils. The variety tends towards uppish alcohol and lower acidity when not kept in check but Mocavero's style has loads of freshness and finesse. The well balanced structure and alcohol complements the dark damson fruit and hints of spice. Lovely wine for grilled meat dishes!

This is a fabulous example of single varietal Chardonnay from a warm climate area on the Salento peninsula. The cool breeze flows in from the Adriatic and keeps the acidity up in the fruit maintaining the freshness and balance. Aromas of peach, green fruit and citrus lead to an elegant palate cut by sappy acidity, excellent for fish dishes!
A lovely drop of Vernaccia this, restraint and finesse are the calling cards but the subtle citrus and peach skin fruit is there supported by lovely acidity and body. The classic almond twist of Vernaccia makes this a great wine for Barbecued fish and vegetables.
The wine production is run by Federico Rainero and the 200 hectares produce some of Emilia's finest and purest wines which often receive the top awards from Gambero Rosso and other important Italian wine guides. Considerable investment has been made in both the vineyard and cellar over the past few years and the vines are reaching their peak. The result is concentrated fruit and wines oozing flavour and elegance. What makes these wines so unique is that they are made almost exclusively by former addicts who in the process of their rehabilitation learnt the intricacies of vineyard management and cellar techniques. The passion behind San Patrignano is not only a passion for wine but also a passion for life, rediscovered by people who had all but given up hope!
This wine is a pure Tuscan delight. Remember Chianti is traditionally not a big heavy fruit driven wine, it is about delicacy and sense of terroir. The pure fruit of Sangiovese can be easily masked by too much oak and Camporena get it just right. The wine abounds with fresh bitter cherry fruit, crisp acidity and soft but well defined tannins. At 4 years old the wine still tastes delightfully young. There is a note of something earthy and leathery behind the fruit as well. A lovely drop, for barbecued lamb or even slightly chilled at lunchtime with some good salami, pecorino cheese and a salad of artichokes. (I am writing while the sun shines outside and the temp is up around 25 degrees here in Settle which may be influencing my tasting note, it's like being in Tuscany!)
Sangiovese has never been so approachable and juicy as in the hands of San Patrignano. The vibrant ruby red colour leads to a lovely nose redolent of flowers and soft red fruits like raspberry and cranberry. The smooth and fruity palate is youthful and fresh, medium bodied and perfectly balanced. Super wine and ideal for summer BBQs! The new 08 vintage is even better as they have made changes in the vineyard that have resulted in a more concentrated wine. 08 Aulente is fabulous and my de-fault red for Pasta, grilled meat dishes and general all round fantastic drinking!
This beautiful dry white wine really struck me when I first tasted it at the recent Vinitaly wine show in Verona. It has a bright straw yellow, intense and persistent nose and taste that reminds you of acacia and citrus fruits. The 09 vintage is one in which the positive characters of each variety are noticeable in the glass. There are nuances typical of Sauvignon with its delicately grassy notes and also some of the Chardonnay’s rounded overtones of green apple, grapefruit peel and elderberry. This is a super white wine and a real crowd pleaser, ideal for dinner parties and excellent with artichokes, gnocchi or grilled fish
